The town of Duxbury includes several village areas and many historic landmarks, one being the Myles Standish Monument that stands 291 feet high. It is true that the focal point in Duxbury is the Atlantic ocean and many lush neighborhoods stand on gentle hills just above the sea. But this is not to the neglect of its interior sections where, for example, the town recently completed a $125 million new middle and high school complex.

 

Duxbury MA: Recreation

Because of it’s expansive shoreline, water recreation is central to Duxbury’s enjoyment. There are many small boat regattas in the summer and the Duxbury Yacht Club near Snug Harbor is quite active.

Duxbury Beach is a six mile long barrier beach that reaches a width of 50 yards at some points. It is accessed by the historic, wooden Powder Point Bridge from Duxbury, or from Gurnet Road in Marshfield. Duxbury Beach is one of the most sought after beach areas on the South Shore and while a small part of the beach is public, the majority of it is for Duxbury residents only, or those who purchase a drive-on sticker.

Inland activities are as abundant in Duxbury and include many conservation land areas, and recreational parks where people enjoy hiking, dog walking, horseback trail riding and bike riding. Duxbury also has many ponds, marshes, bogs and tributaries running from the Back River allowing for kayaking and the like.

The Art Complex Museum is a regional art center located in Duxbury with rotating exhibits and a reference library of over 5,000 publications. And each summer the Duxbury Music Festival provides students the chance to work with renowned musicians for two weeks of classical music instruction and performance.

Although Duxbury is a sprawling New England coastal town, small shopping areas provide easily for day to day convenience needs. One area is Hall’s Corner located at a roundabout with a grocery store, gas station, pharmacy, the South Duxbury Post Office and other small shops. Larger shopping malls are in bordering towns of both Kingston and Pembroke.

While there is no commuter rail service in the town of Duxbury, the train passes through the neighboring town of Kingston.

Duxbury has four public schools: The Chandler Elementary School, Alden Elementary School, Duxbury Middle School, and Duxbury High School. Duxbury, MA also has two private schools which are the Bay Farm Montessori Academy and the Good Shepherd Christian Academy.
